Punishment Room

This illustration, from an old German book, depicts an unfortunate male who has obviously committed a serious transgression. He has been marched upstairs to Madame's discipline room in the attic, strapped down to the punishment bench, and is now begging and pleading as his bare posterior is soundly whipped. I like the rather stark, moody atmosphere of the gloomy, bare punishment room. I also love the determined expression on the face of the disciplinarian and desperate look of the restrained victim as he struggles to maintain composure.

I really love those early and vintage illustrations. They have qualities that are often hard to find in some of the more recent work.
